Volcanic Glaze
Posted in Art Pottery on 08/11/2009 08:11 am by adminWhat in the cinder cone 10 ceramic glazes do?
I try to find a Japanese Shino with feldspar and volcanic ash. What does ash have (ie, dye, binder). Where can I find a picture of what high fire glaze components do?
There are many good books that have everything you need. One of my favorites is the clay and glazes by Daniel Rhodes and the spectrum of ceramics by Robin Hopper. A website you might find interesting is ceramic materials.com. Ash tends to make it more fluid and glazes add visual texture. Wood ash tends toward earth tones and volcanic ash gives green / black in the tests I made. Of course, this type of wood, where Volcanic ash is, these have an impact on color as the glaze becomes too. Good luck.
