Mid Century Modern

My living room and dining room are an L-shaped space. My living room furniture has clean lines and art / accessories lean towards the mid-century modern. I was offered the dining room my great-grandparent and when I saw it in a storage room, it seems pretty simple too. However, now I know it is rather formal, but because it is a legacy, I want to keep it. I like the dark wood color (mostly black). The tops of buffet and table are not in the best shape yet. Condition questions aside, without some sort of cover (tablecloth or runner), dark furniture dominates the space attractively. The problem is that machine Table does not appear to increase the formality of the room. Value is not a problem here, because I did not intend to sell all but I'm not so sure how I feel about finishing the table & buffet is tops. So how do I moderate the formality of this set while maintaining a consistent look?
Rehabilitation of the game will not only make it better, since its current state is not in very good shape, but you will finish it in a spot that soften the formality a bit. You could do a shabby chic look (to wash the old one) which would modernize, lighten and yet retain its character.
