Hardy plants for non-green thumb in the middle of western Michigan? Those who return year after year?

What kind of flowers are good for someone that kills almost every flower it touches ..? I am looking for something I can plant once and then not have to keep replanting every year .. if you see my previous question, I think to make potted flowers in my landscape / garden areas and am not sure what I can put in these pots ...

Very few perennials will tolerate being confined in pots. Two I can think of what he will tolerate are geraniums and dahlias, but you must put them in big enough pots and bring them inside at the end of each season. They go dormant once inside - Do not water them during the winter, but give them a good solid dose first thing in the spring when you take them outside. These plants are perennial in zone 6 in general, while this practice will simulate the warmer weather in the area. Both plants like full sun and will need to be watered quite often - they like the soil evenly moist.
