Do I put rocks in the bottom of a pot / planter before adding the soil?

Hi, I'm planting petunias and geraniums in pots plastic with round holes at the bottom (for drainage). So my question is what I put rocks in the soil before adding? I usually put the rocks down, and my flowers grow very well, but I have no rocks and I was wondering if putting the rocks is really necessary. As you say, promote drainage of rocks, as the soil tends to "compact" and if its "clay" it will not let the water run properly. marbles or anything that gives "space" will work too. I wish you good luck ... Jesse
