The famous African-American Inventor Elijah McCoy was issued more than 57 patents for his inventions during his life. His best known invention is a cup that fed lubricating oil to machine bearings through a tube of small caliber. As an engineer in the early 1870s, he noticed that machines had to be stopped every time they needed oil, which takes up valuable time and expensive. McCoy invented a device to oil the machinery while it worked. It was soon used on engines, locomotives, steamships Great Lakes on ocean liners and on machinery in factories. His invention became so popular that no engine or machine was considered complete until it had a McCoy Lubricator. The expression "The Real McCoy "soon taken as a way of saying that people were getting the best equipment available.
