It is a question for specialists Germanic Studies. All other modern Germanic language, both West Germanic (Dutch and English) and North Germanic (Swedish, Norwegian, Danish), lost the distinction nominative, dative, accusative and its name system (but not in the pronoun system). The genitive is still preserved, however. The exceptions are (1) Modern German (West Germanic) and (2) Icelandic (North Germanic).
Well, Firstly, many Norwegian dialects use the dative productive enough, not only in a few sentences together. Historical linguists generally can not ask why or why not. Language changes are usually linked to other (earlier) changes. I am sure that the North Germanic languages (on the mainland - Not Icelandic), offers stress the first syllable, in general, and therefore the final syllables (where the vowels reported cases) gradually lost their morphological distinctions. Iceland supports a variety of syllable structures. In Norwegian, the passage of stress before a variety of effects on syllable structures, some dialects have something called "balance" vowel others use a process like Turkish - harmony vowel. I can recommend a book for the Nordic languages (in English) if you are interested in learning more. My answer should serve as a helpful introduction fast, however. I have my Ph.D. in Germanic philology and studied many Germanic languages, as OHG, MHG, Old Norse, Old / Middle English, ..... janus005 at NCU dot edu
