The question is India, where guppies are used for the fight against malaria. I am a breeder of GuppY. This is not observed in guppies kept in aquariums. They do not recur.
It may the habitat where they live and the food they receive. As a lover guppy had seen this type of male guppies bold in the main water tank in our house too. He was a tall 6 'wide 8' long and 10 'water tank deep water where the local municipality Corporation and is used constantly to come and tank walls were straight. No shallow end any where in the tank. People used to dip the bucket and remove the water. Whenever someone approaches used tank guppies to dive and return near the surface after a while. Here, the walls of the tank had velvetlike algae growing on what was consumed by fish. Many times the chlorinated water used to come. Guppies always survived. Here are the big males have been observed. As you described, they had body fat in raw in the middle and used to look like pregnant. I used to keep them in small pots and buckets expecting that they will give you colored babies. The fins used show that they are men and the results not be used for babies. some have become used to normal after somedays. May be it was food or depth of tank which was also men become bold. Probably the thin-bodied men are struggling to dive a few feet from time to time and to the surface, where women were more successful and less strained because of body shape. Never seen this type of male in shallow reservoirs of less than 3 feet deep.
