My plants in baskets will not develop, even though I water them every day.?

My planters are all wire baskets that are lined Peet's. The weather was very hot, but I water at night throoughly almost every night. There are ten baskets and each has its own growth with degree success, but after two months, has not increased in general over an inch and a half. I planted wild flowers, zinnias and worries. I would say that the site is about ten feet long with direct sunlight for several hours a day, and on one side, but that changes toward the sun. One end is sunnier than the other, but not significantly increasing the other end. I then planted with soil which was supposed to have 7 months of fertilizer. I think a lot has ceased with the draining of water every day but I do know. Can you offer advice and can you tell me what I might be able to plant this time of year to offset the loss of my growth? I live in central Indiana. Thank You

There is an excellent book called Container Gardening by Ed Smith, where he explains the virtues of self-watering containers. The problem with the plants not to self-watering containers is that for the most part, they have plants too much or too little water, and when you do water, nutrients are washed away. With self-water containers, plants get exactly the water they need and stay put nutrients in the soil so they are available for plants. So if you want to try to replant, you might consider self-watering hanging baskets. Ask them to your local garden center. They meet young flowering plants, because it's a bit late to start growing flowers from seed now.
